Barossa wine varieties

Barossa’s vineyards are a living expression of history, resilience, and innovation. With over 40 wine grape varieties planted across the region, its diversity is its strength – generous Shiraz, old-vine Grenache, blackcurrant-rich Cabernet Sauvignon, high-country Riesling, and time-honoured Semillon all thrive here. While red varieties dominate, making up 84% of plantings, Barossa’s ability to evolve and adapt has cemented its place as one of the world’s great wine regions.

"When I think about Barossa, I reflect on Peter Lehmann who always liked to lecture me that the Barossa uniqueness was its diversity – he’d say where else can you drive 15 kilometres one way and find the finest Riesling in the word then drive five kilometres the other way and discover the best Shiraz in the world. This region is not a one trick pony and we should celebrate its diversity under the trust mark of the Barossa."

Barossa’s wine landscape: tradition, reinvented

Barossa is a region that honours its past while embracing the future. Shiraz may be its global calling card, but beyond the generous reds lies a landscape of discovery. Grenache, once a quiet workhorse of fortified wines, is now one of Barossa’s most exciting varietals – found in everything from deep, structured reds to bright, spice-laden styles and delicate rosés.

Cabernet Sauvignon has long played a role in Barossa’s blends, but today it’s thriving in its own right, shaped by higher-altitude sites that enhance its blackcurrant, plum, and dark cherry notes. Meanwhile, Eden Valley Riesling continues to set the benchmark for Australian whites, its crisp acidity and striking purity evolving into honeyed richness over time.

As winemakers rediscover forgotten vines of Carignan, Touriga Nacional, and Cinsault, new possibilities emerge, alongside Mediterranean newcomers like Sangiovese and Tempranillo. These wines tell the story of Barossa – deeply rooted, constantly evolving, and always inviting curiosity. Explore the full spectrum of Barossa’s wine varieties.
