There’s something about the energy of the market with locals connecting and excited tourists experiencing our farmers market food haven for the first time. It gives you a real sense of place and belonging to the Barossa community and gets you excited for the week ahead full of good quality produce that has been grow and made locally with integrity. I take the opportunity to do my food shopping for the week and of course collect some delicious local treats, including some bites for the hike coming up in the afternoon.
After the farmers market, a stop at Barossa Valley Cheese Company must be made. You can’t have a weekend without cheese! I will also pop by next door to Casa Carboni to sit down at their enoteca to enjoy a focaccia or panino filled with local full-flavoured ingredients to fuel up for the hike (and no doubt a second coffee will be enjoyed as well).
After unpacking the shopping for the week and packing the goodies for the hike, it’s times to head off to the Barossa Ranges. It’s always hard to decide which hike to choose in the Barossa. There is a huge offering of bushwalking trails throughout the region, so I get out my Barossa Bushwalks brochure or head to the website to choose which one will suit the day. A favourite is the Little Kaiserstuhl hike beginning at the end of Krondorf Road. I prefer to do the loop anti-clockwise, as it gives you the opportunity to enjoy your local bites with a view close to the end of the hike. It provides a bit of everything – great views, plenty of wildlife, a challenge for the legs and an ideal spot to enjoy your food and a cuppa while overlooking the glorious views of the Barossa.
A day in the Barossa won’t be complete without a local drop satisfying the taste buds. Following a hike I want to sit back and relax, so enjoying a glass of Semillon at David Franz sitting on their patio chairs will be perfect. The view there and the wine won’t disappoint.
After a big day, a relaxing night is in order. Takeaway wood oven pizza from Ember it is. I won't go past the truffle mushroom.
