Net Zero Project

Barossa Australia is leading an ambitious project to revolutionise sustainable packaging in the wine industry.

Barossa Australia is bringing together industry leaders to revolutionise wine packaging and set a new sustainability benchmark for the global wine industry. With a $100,000 LEAP Grant from Green Industries South Australia (GISA), this project aims to develop Net Zero-emission glass wine bottles, reducing carbon impact while maintaining Barossa’s world-class reputation.

To drive this transformation, Barossa Australia has established a Project Advisory Group with key stakeholders from major wine producers, glass bottle manufacturers, government agencies, and regional organisations. This group will provide insights and guidance, ensuring a commercially viable and scalable solution.

The project consists of three main phases

1

Creating a Net Zero-carbon wine bottle by bringing together wine producers, glass manufacturers, and Green Gas producers to develop a more sustainable packaging solution.

2

Introducing Green Gas options for wineries to help producers reduce Scope 1 emissions at their own facilities through new retail energy products.

3

Assessing the feasibility of a Barossa-based Anaerobic Digestion Plant to convert local agricultural waste into Green Gas for injection into the region’s gas network.

"These initiatives will contribute to the decarbonisation and circularisation of the wine industry. They also open doors to new investment and job opportunities - not just in Barossa but across Australia,"

Scott Hazeldine, CEO of Barossa Australia

“The project sets a precedent for Australia, which has faced challenges around regulatory support, incentives, and supply chain alignment,” adds Scott. “Barossa Australia’s approach fosters collaboration among key stakeholders, bridging this gap and creating a long-term, scalable solution.”

The project is already underway and is scheduled for completion by June 2025, with early findings on the Net Zero-carbon bottle concept expected later this year. Barossa Australia will continue to share updates and insights, providing a model for other regions looking to decarbonise agribusiness supply chains and harness bioresources for bioenergy production.
