Environmental champions

Barossa’s vineyards are more than just the source of world-class wines—they’re part of a living landscape shaped by the dedication of local growers. The Environmental Champions of Barossa video series shines a light on the viticulturists and land stewards leading the charge in sustainability, sharing real stories of innovation, resilience, and environmental care.

Now more than ever, with climate change and environmental responsibility at the forefront, their work is vital. From sustainable soil management to water conservation and regenerative farming, these innovators are ensuring that Barossa’s vineyards remain resilient for generations to come. Their commitment not only protects the land but also preserves the character and quality of Barossa’s wines in an ever-changing world.

At the heart of this series are Barossa’s wine grape growers—the custodians of the land who are adapting to climate challenges with forward-thinking practices. Prue Henschke, Anthony Scholz, Evan Gobell, Sam Dahlitz, Karl Schiller, John & Kym Kalleske, Dan Falkenberg, and Dr. Michael McCarthy are pioneering approaches in regenerative soil management, water conservation, biodiversity restoration, and renewable energy. Their work ensures that Barossa’s vineyards not only survive but thrive.

Filmed by renowned photographer Dragan Radocaj and funded by Natural Resources, Adelaide & Mount Lofty Ranges, this series captures firsthand the innovative work happening across the region.

Watch the videos below and see how Barossa’s growers are shaping a more sustainable future.

“My philosophy is a holistic one – to ensure our created environment sits in a healthy balance with our natural landscape. I would like to see the next generation inherit a fertile and sustainable land. Using the principles of biodynamics and organics enables me to create the best environment for plant growth and since I started using these principles, I am seeing the benefits in greater expression of aromas and textures in the wines from all of our vineyards.”
